How Much to Charge for Babysitting?

The rate to charge for babysitting is dependent on a few factors. Your age, experience and where you live. According to a current USA Today article the national average rate is $10.00 per hour for one child. Additional children watched makes for a higher pay rate.

If you are between the ages of 11 and 13 and just starting out babysitting, your rate will be considerable less than an experienced sitter. The average rate charged for babysitters of this age is $4.-$6.00 per hour. You would charge that for one child and not for an infant. An infant requires feeding, diaper changes, and continual attention. The price for watching an infant under the age of two should be $7.00 per hour. That is only if you have had experience with an infant such as a younger sibling.

If you are 14 – 16 years of age and have experience babysitting, the rate should be $6.00 per hour per child. If watching an infant the charge should be $8.00 – $9.00 per hour. If you are watching an additional child an extra $2.00 – $3.00 should be added to your rate for the extra child.

Babysitters who are 17 years of age and can drive earn $7.00-$12.00 rate with additional children rate should be increased by $3.00 per hour per child. If you are expected to drive the children anywhere such as to sporting events and classes then you need to add that to your rate. Figure out how many miles you are driving to events and add that to the rate asked.

Education such as CPR training and Safe Sitter Certification will increase the rate you can ask for babysitting. CPR training is often free through public service programs such as Fire Departments. Red Cross and hospitals also offer this four hour class. You can also get certification on-line. The Safe Sitter Certification is open for people ages 11 to 14. This is available through YMCA facilities. The program teaches first aid, injury protection, knowing when to call the parents and how to keep yourself safe when babysitting. Pointers and tips on how to create your babysitting service are provides as well.

Adults who become a part-time nanny or full-time nanny earn $12.00 – $15.00 per hour per child. A nanny is responsible for more tasks involving childcare. They usually get paid on a weekly basis. Live-in nannies often get their own room, transportation for the children and a cell phone. They will be involved in feedings, errand running, social events and at times light housecleaning chores. A live-out nanny is typically paid $700.00 per week, for the national average. Live-in nannies are paid less as their rent is covered by living in with the family. An AA degree or BA degree from college is preferable in childhood education or psychology. A nanny is expected to work with the children’s parents in customizing their plan to mesh with parents ideals and expectations.
